Realms of Imagination, edited by Tanya Kirk and Matthew Sangster, accompanies a major exhibition on fantasy at the British Library. I was excited to contribute an essay to the book, since it’s been 10 years since A Stranger in Olondria was published and I wanted to mark the occasion. My essay, “The Everything Book,” is about epic fantasy in the context of the global epic tradition (so essentially all of narrative since the dawn of time!!). To make it more manageable, I focused on 5 key dynamics I see operating in both ancient epics and modern epic fantasy. The project was a pleasure, and the book is gorgeous. You can read more about it here.
